Ingredients
Scale
To create a hummus that is rich and flavorful, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- 1 can (15 oz) of chickpeas, drained and rinsed (or 1 ½ cups cooked chickpeas)
- ¼ cup of tahini
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, peeled
- Juice of 1 large lemon (about 3 tablespoons)
- 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
- ½ teaspoon of ground cumin
- Salt to taste
- 2-4 tablespoons of water or chickpea liquid (aquafaba) for consistency
- Paprika or sumac for garnish (optional)
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
Creating classic hummus at home is a simple process that involves just a few easy steps. Follow these instructions to achieve a deliciously smooth and flavorful hummus:
- Prepare the Chickpeas: If using canned chickpeas, drain and rinse them thoroughly under cold water. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can peel the chickpeas by gently pinching them between your fingers to remove the skins.
- Blend the Garlic and Lemon Juice: In a food processor, combine the peeled garlic cloves and fresh lemon juice. Process for about 30 seconds until the garlic is finely chopped. This step ensures that the garlic flavor is well distributed throughout the hummus.
- Add Tahini and Olive Oil: Add the tahini and olive oil to the food processor. Blend the mixture for about another 30 seconds until it becomes smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything is well incorporated.
- Incorporate the Chickpeas: Add half of the chickpeas to the food processor and blend for 1 minute. Scrape down the sides and add the remaining chickpeas. Blend for another 1-2 minutes until the hummus is thick and smooth.
- Adjust the Consistency: With the processor running, gradually add 2-4 tablespoons of water or chickpea liquid (aquafaba) until you reach your desired consistency. The hummus should be creamy and spreadable but not too runny.
- Season the Hummus: Add ground cumin and salt to taste. Blend for another 30 seconds to incorporate the seasonings.
- Taste and Adjust: Taste the hummus and adjust the seasoning as necessary. You can add more lemon juice for acidity, garlic for pungency, or salt to enhance the flavor.
- Serve and Garnish: Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl, drizzle with a generous amount of olive oil, and garnish with paprika or sumac and fresh parsley if desired.
